Our feet and ankles carry all of the weight of everything we do. Though designed for the use, it does not take much to bend or twist them just beyond how they are meant to be used. There are many things that can happen to our feet, with a sprained ankle being the most common. Dr. Jeremy Thomas, of Triangle Foot & Ankle Specialist, serving Southern Pines, NC, would like to discuss these in case you have concerns.
What is A Sprained Ankle?
Tough bands of tissue, ligaments, help to hold the ankle bones together. They serve to help stabilize our joints. A sprain occurs when the ligaments are forced past the range of motion or design resulting in the bands stretching or tearing.
What Causes a Sprained Ankle?
There are several things that can cause a sprained ankle. The most common include:
- Sports or athletics;
- Work, including housework;
- Slipping on a surface;
- Tripping over something; and/or
- A sudden change in direction.
How Do You Prevent A Sprained Ankle?
Many sprained ankles could have been avoided with a little preparation. If you are aware that you will be doing something that is physically exerting, be sure to use the proper foot and ankle supports.
Be mindful of your movement and do not do anything to increase risk, such as walk on wet surfaces if avoidable.
Wear proper footwear for whatever it is that you are doing.
How Do You Treat A Sprained Ankle?
One of the most important things to do if an ankle is sprained is to rest. Ice and compression treatments help with the pain and the swelling. Be sure to keep your foot elevated.
If the sprained ankle is severe enough, it may warrant a visit to the doctor. In some severe cases (especially tears), surgery may be required.
If You Don't Treat a Sprained Ankle
Though a sprain may not be a break, there are dangers to not adequately treating a sprained ankle. This can lead to chronic pain, swelling, instability of the foot, and arthritis.
